#SuicidePreventionMonth POV: I struggled with a #SuicidePreventionMonth

POV: I struggled with anxiety, depression and even suicidal ideation as a teen 🥺. I eventually found a way to cope and find meaning in my life by asking for and accepting help 🙏 , learning to love myself, appreciating small wonders, and regularly practicing gratitude. Now, I’m a “cup full” mom and psychiatrist dedicated to helping others out of the darkness to feel better and HOPE again 💜

Fo those who may be struggling or having suicidal thoughts, you are not alone in this. Remember, there’s a multitude of individuals, from friends and family to mental health professionals, ready and willing to help. If you’re struggling with suicidal thoughts, it’s imperative to seek help immediately. Never hesitate to communicate your feelings. If you ever feel like you’re in a crisis or emergency situation, please visit the nearest emergency room or contact 911/ 988 or a crisis hotline immediately.

For those who want to know how you can help - ask how people how they’re doing and listen. It might be awkward and at times, uncomfortable, but keep on checking in. Create a safe and supportive space and let them know you’re there. Sometimes, it you might need to help them take steps to get care.

Resources :
🚨 In the U.S., the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline can be reached by dialing 988. This 3-digit number is a direct line to vital resources, ensuring that help is just a few taps away. However, it may not yet be fully implemented in all areas so alternate numbers are provided below.

National Suicide Prevention Lifeline:
    •    Phone: 1-800-273-TALK (1-800-273-8255)
The Lifeline provides 24/7, free and confidential support for people in distress, and prevention and crisis resources for you or your loved ones.

For those who prefer texting:
    •    Crisis Text Line: Text “HELLO” to 741741
    •    The Crisis Text Line serves anyone, in any type of crisis, connecting them with a crisis counselor who can provide support and information.

#nationalsonsday I never would have imagined how #nationalsonsday

I never would have imagined how these boys have made and changed me as a mom and individual. Their boundless energy keeps me on my toes (and, yes, sometimes exhausted 😅 ). Their laughter, curiosity, and joy light up my world. They inspire me daily to venture beyond my comfort zones, both in the great outdoors and within, redefining what it means to truly live and love. 💙💙

We’re all multi-faceted beings and a blend of many passions. Whether it’s reveling in the beauty of nature, embarking on adventures, cherishing motherhood moments, capturing and sharing stories, dancing, cooking, traveling, or practicing medicine - they all echo my intent to live fully, find beauty everywhere, and choose hope/ joy.

Being a psychiatrist is my professional calling, but it’s also challenging and emotionally taxing at times - especially these past few years. The annual physician recognition gala was a fun evening of celebrating our collective dedication to healthcare. 💛

Embrace the adventure and seize every opportunity Embrace the adventure and seize every opportunity to get outside!

Even as a dual physician household with kids in public school and extracurriculars, we make it work! I always feel best physically and mentally when I’m outside, so I’ve made spending time in our parks a priority for my family. Having said that, although we #workhardplayhard, it’s also important to rest and recharge at home when that’s what is needed. Our public lands are ready for you whenever you are 💚

This is from a quick <24 h trip we took to Joshua Tree National Park to see the Perseid Meteor shower in August. Do you have any trips to a national or local park coming up?

Humpback whales 🐋 bubble net feeding. 7.15.2023 Humpback whales 🐋 bubble net feeding. 7.15.2023 Kenai Fjords

This was the most incredible 🤯 wildlife experience I’ve ever had in my life. This cooperative hunting behavior, exhibited by humpback whales, occurs in the waters of Resurrection Bay and Kenai Fjords National Park each summer around June or July.

Here’s a brief explanation of “bubble net feeding”:

1. Teamwork: A group of humpback whales work together, often in teams of 4 to 20 individuals.

2. Initiation: One or more whales will dive deep below a school of small fish, like herring.

3. Creating the Net: The whales release a stream of bubbles while swimming in an upward spiral. These bubbles form a “net” that surrounds the school of fish.

4. Herding: As the bubbles rise, they create a barrier that the fish are reluctant to cross, effectively corralling them into a tight, dense ball.

5.Signal to Strike: Often, a vocal signal or a series of vocalizations will be made by one of the whales, which seems to coordinate the group’s action.

6. Feeding Surge: With the fish corralled in the center, the whales will then all surge upwards with their mouths open, swallowing big gulps of the trapped fish.

7. Surface and Breathe: Once they’ve captured their prey, the whales will come to the surface to breathe and prepare for the next feeding dive.

What’s your most memorable wildlife encounter story?

POV: floating down the Kenai River in Alaska, July POV: floating down the Kenai River in Alaska, July 2023 💦 🦅 🐻 🎣 🌲 ( 📌 save this adventure if you’re planning to visit Alaska! )

This was one of our favorite activities on our Alaska trip so I wanted to bring you along vicariously through this one minute reel 🎞️ ! I am also sharing a guide to Kenai River Scenic Rafting to help others plan their Alaskan adventure. Is Alaska on your travel wish list?

The Kenai River offers breathtaking views of the Alaskan wilderness. As you float down the beautiful turquoise river, you can witness stunning landscapes, majestic mountains, and lush forests. The best time to go is June to August when the weather is pleasant and wildlife are active.

When choosing a rafting tour, consider:
- Duration: Half (2-3 hours) or full-day (5-7 hours) tours.
- Guided vs. Self-Guided: For families, especially with younger children, a guided tour is recommended for safety and informational purposes.* There are a few rafting and fishing tour operators out of the Cooper Landing area.
- There are various float options available, from serene and gentle floats suitable for all ages to more adventurous white-water stretches for thrill-seekers.

What to Bring:
- Waterproof Bags: For cameras, snacks, and personal items
- Dress in Layers: Weather can change rapidly. Waterproof outer layers are ideal. Waders are available to rent.
- Sunscreen and Bug Spray.
- Binoculars: Great for spotting wildlife from a distance.

Other Tips:
- Reservations: Peak season can be busy. Book in advance.
- Respect the environment. Leave no trace. Remember to view animals from a safe distance. Do not feed or approach them.

*We are so grateful to my brother’s friend and Alaskan local Chip and his family for sharing his favorite parts of Alaska with us and helping make our week so special.

Caught this bear-y special wildlife sighting when Caught this bear-y special wildlife sighting when we stopped at an inlet of the Kenai River during our river rafting day. Have you ever encountered a bear when out in the wilderness? 🐻 🌲

Here are some safety tips if you see a black bear high up in a tree:

1. Stay Calm: It’s common for black bears to climb trees, especially younger ones. They do it for safety, to get food, or just to relax.

2. Give It Space: Ensure that you’re a safe distance away from the tree’s base and bear. This will reduce the chances of the bear feeling threatened.

3. Leave Quietly: If you’re in its territory, leave the area calmly and slowly, talking in a low voice so the bear is aware of your presence and isn’t startled.

4. Do Not Approach or Crowd the Bear: Trying to get closer for a photo or out of curiosity can stress the bear and provoke a defensive reaction.

5. Keep Pets and Children Close: Ensure they’re under control and away from the bear.

Remember, the bear is likely just as interested in avoiding conflict as you are. If given space and time, it will come down and move on when it feels safe.

From small steps to seasoned strides, three genera From small steps to seasoned strides, three generations take on the Byron Glacier trail. 7.13.23 🥾🏔️❤️#bringthegrandparents #intergenerationalmonth

The Byron Glacier Trail is a popular and easy trail located in the Chugach National Forest in Alaska.

* Trailhead: Portage Glacier Rd, Girdwood, AK 99587, USA.
* Distance: Approximately 1.4 miles (2.25 km) round trip.
* Difficulty: Easy. The trail is well-maintained and suitable for hikers of all skill levels.
* Best Time to Visit: Late spring to early fall, as the trail can be snow-covered in winter.

Tips:
	•	The trail passes through a beautiful alder and cottonwood forest, and crosses over glacier streams. Towards the end, the trail opens up to a gravel outwash plain from the Byron Glacier. You can explore further by going off-trail, but be cautious as the terrain can be unstable closer to the glacier.
	•	Footwear: Wear sturdy hiking boots. The trail can be muddy and slippery in spots. Our family is all in @keen @keen.kids hiking shoes.

On this, and every hike, please leave no trace. Pack out everything you bring in, respect the environment, and consider the safety of yourself and others when exploring off-trail or near the glacier. 💚

Hi there! 👋 We’re the Wongs, and we live in S Hi there! 👋 We’re the Wongs, and we live in Southern California (this pic was taken on our summer trip to Alaska). We like to show that a life lived fully can be compatible with traditional work/ school schedules. Here’s an intro / update about us :

- Jason and I are both full time physicians: he’s a general surgeon, and I’m a consultation-liaison psychiatrist.
- Our kids (3rd and 5th graders) attend public school, and participate in a number of extracurricular activities. 🏊‍♂️ 🎻
- My parents live nearby. Having a multigenerational household has many perks, but also means a lot of compromise. ☯️
- We are intentional about carving out time to unplug, be present and make memories. I check our schedules and save dates well in advance in order to make the most of school breaks, PTO, and non-sports / non-oncall weekends.
- Although it’s nice when we can take a week off for a bigger trip, most of our adventures are quick and close to home.
- Almost everything posted is latergram.
- We don’t do it all. It’s important to remember no one does. We prioritize what’s important to us and let some other things slide which don’t make it onto the gram.

I have always found comfort and inspiration in nature, and this drives me to make the outdoors a priority for our family. Neither Jason nor I grew up doing the outdoorsy things we do now, but it’s been fun figuring out how to camp, ski, and more alongside our kids.

Coordinating schedules and interests isn't easy. We don’t always share the same enthusiasm for each trip or activity, but we SHOW UP. As we juggle work / family and personal wellness through various seasons and stages of life, I’ll continue to share our travel stories, outdoor guides, wellness tips, and everyday wonder.

I cherish this IG space as a journal and place to connect. It warms my heart to know our shares might inspire a trip, a new adventure, or a fresh perspective. I am grateful for all the inspiration I get here too! ❤️

POV: Here in SoCal still enjoying summer! ☀️💦

It was 90F today 🥵 , so we headed to Wild Rivers water park in Irvine and had a blast! We’ve been to different water parks and this is one of our favorites. Our kids love all the attractions - there is plenty for little and big kids, and adults!

Tips:
- they often have specials - I bought our tickets preseason for a discounted price! They currently have discounted tickets on Groupon as well
- since it is nearing the end of season, it is only open weekends now through October 1 - 10am to 5pm
- what to bring: towel, waterproof phone pouch lanyard, sunglasses for walking around (take them off for wave pool or slides or you may loose them), sunscreen, flip flops, credit card and drivers license (if you want to purchase an alcoholic beverage they card everyone).
- they have multiple water refill stations, so bring your reusable water bottle!
- there is food and snacks for purchase throughout the park.

Is it still summer/ hot where you live, or has it cooled down for fall?

PS- I still have a bit more to share from our Alaska trip, but like to mix in some real time stuff here and there. We’re back to school and don’t have any big family trips for a while, but we’ll continue to weekend warrior and share all the fun things you can do despite having a traditional work / school schedule 💛

South Fork Falls is a short, easy and beautiful 1.3 mile out and back trail near Eagle River, just outside of Anchorage. There are two paths which take you to different views of the waterfalls - one from a viewing deck at the top of the falls, the other at the base of the falls. We chose the latter, the lower trail, which we accessed by taking a right just before the bridge and continuing along the river.

The trailhead is in a residential area, so please stay on the trail and be respectful of private property. Please leave no trace. There’s a small area to park at the bottom of Ken Logan Circle. Chugach State Park trails require a day-use parking pass or parking decal. Dogs are allowed.

August 2023 photo dump and reflections - a collect August 2023 photo dump and reflections - a collection unfiltered, somewhat random, every day moments 💛

I fell asleep last night night (8.31.23) while picking photos for this post, which says a lot about how the past month was 🙃. August was good, but it was also tough. There were challenges, but also celebrations. I poured from my cup, and did my best to fill it up again.

Some highlights from August included celebrating our 14th anniversary, traveling to Canada to spend time with Jason’s side of the family, celebrating birthdays, and back to school. In August, I also had an emergency root canal making me very grateful for access to, and insurance for, dental care. The kids took a cooking class at @surlatable and I’m looking forward to them making me some snacks- lol.

Between working and parenting, I haven’t had much time or energy for self care - in many ways, this IG creative space is an outlet for me, but I have decided I want to start exercising again this fall.

August moments to remember :
1- celebrating our anniversary at @marchemoderne
2- enjoying at Funbox Laguna Hills where I met @southoc_moms in real life 🙌 (30% off tix with FeliciaFUN)
3- dental pain ugh
4- meeting their baby cousin 🥰
5- taking my in laws glamping in Saskatoon 🏕️
6- camping in Joshua Tree for the Perseid Meteor showers ✨
7- celebrating Jason and Laura’s birthdays 🥳
8- Jason’s hockey team won champs 🏒
9- appreciating a beautiful sunset before SoCal’s hurricane / tropical storm Hilary 🌅
10- kids are back to school! 🎒

How was your August, and what do you look forward to for September?

This tour was the biggest splurge of our Alaska trip, but 100% worth it, in my opinion. We lucked out with clear skies, and magnificent views of Denali and other peaks and glaciers. It was an adventure and experience we will remember forever.

*My parents sat out this excursion because my dad isn’t comfortable with small planes. We went with my brother’s family and his friends for a total of ten passengers (slide 7 and 8). I wish they joined us because they would have loved the views, and we felt so safe with our wonderful pilot, but it’s important to recognize and respect different people’s interests and comfort when traveling as a group. 💛

Are you an adrenaline junkie on vacation or do you prefer lounging? Or maybe a mix of both or somewhere in between?

I would describe myself somewhere in the middle, but thanks to my multigenerational extended family with diverse interests, we get to try a variety of activities when in vacation together!

I don’t like going fast or out of control so was glad 1) I didn’t have to drive 2) we went moderate pace given the kids and my parents . Although myself and my parents were a bit apprehensive when we heard about this activity, I’m so glad we went for it because the views were amazing 🤩 ⛰️ 🦅

Let’s give it up 🙌 for the OG adventurers of Let’s give it up 🙌 for the OG adventurers of my family - grandma and grandpa who are still trying new things at age 75, including ATVing as a multigenerational family through the backcountry in Petersville, Alaska.

Who are the OG adventurers in your family?

Sharing as a reminder and inspiration that anyone can be outdoorsy, regardless of experience or age! My parents may look (and actually are!) pretty fun and comfortable outdoors nowadays …. but for most of their lives, they were hard working Chinese immigrants and pretty strict / serious parents. We didn’t have much time or resources for “play” back then, but what they have always had was a willingness to go beyond their comfort zone and try new things. They took us on road trips to national parks during their 1-2 weeks off a year, apple picking on weekends, and at least attempted to tent camp once (it rained, we got soaked, and had to pack up in the middle of the night 😆)

We didn’t really get into more outdoor adventures until my brother and I were grown, working, and started families of our own. Whereas my parents used to take us on adventures, my brother and I now take them on the adventures we plan! I love seeing them enjoy playing at this stage of life- whether it’s atving, zip-lining or snorkeling!

I have noticed them slowing down a little though and sometimes they do sit out some of the activities - but I’m grateful for these experiences we’re able to share together and for them being such good role models! ❤️
