Indoor Skydiving with iFly Utah 3/6/2023 On our Indoor Skydiving with iFly Utah
3/6/2023

On our final day visiting and skiing in the Ogden, Utah area, we stopped at the Salomon Center for our family’s first ever indoor (or outdoor - I’m not THAT adventurous! 😆 ) skydiving experience at iFly Utah.

I’ll be honest -I was a little tentative about whether I’d enjoy this experience. I’m the “risk adverse” member of our family, but now that I’ve done this - I can reassure anyone on the fence that it’s super fun and very safe! The IFly team takes care of everything - they provide an orientation, fit you with the right gear and set you up to fly with an instructor.

Our flight experience included two 1 minute long flights. Since we were first time flyers, we stayed within arms reach of the instructor, roughly 3-6 feet about the net, for the first flight. For our second flight, we opted for the “high flight” which was exhilarating - with the instructor guiding us in a rising and falling pattern 10-20 feet above the net within the flight chamber.

Is this something you’ve either tried, or would like to try? Well the good news is that they have locations all over the US! You can find locations near you by searching on iflyworld.com

Straight out of a hallmark movie - Huntsville Park Straight out of a hallmark movie - Huntsville Park Ice Rink showing off it’s winter wonderland vibes ❄️⛸️

Our friend @_gnar.mar recommended we check out the skating rink after our ski day at Powder Mountain. The rentals shack wasn’t open when we stopped by, but we still took in the magic ✨ and did some twirls of joy! ❤️

Huntsville is a town in Ogden Valley conveniently located to both Powder Mountain and Snowbasin ski resorts. A group of volunteers help run this seasonal outdoor ice rink. It is open as weather and volunteer time permits. Information is posted on the Ice Skate rental shack, located right by the ice rink. Rentals can be purchased with cash or through Venmo, and are $4 per pair.

For up to date info and to ask questions, this is the ice rink’s Facebook page :

March 4, 2023

On our second day skiing in the Ogden Valley area, we visited @powdermountain with @skiutah. Our family loved the wide open groomed trails, as well as ample powder tree runs. This might just be our favorite Utah ski resort so far! Our kids’ especially loved a section called Woody’s World and have already asked us when we can ski there again.

- The mountain receives over 500 inches of snow annually
- Pow Mow has special offerings for beginner skiers, youth and women.

We found our family’s favorite run of the season We found our family’s favorite run of the season🌲⛷️❄️ at Powder Mountain! Stay tuned as I’ll be sharing the PowMow mini vlog tomorrow - summarizing our family’s fun day skiing this gem in Ogden Valley 3.5.23

This clip is of Jason and Alex (10) incredibly captured on an iPhone by @_gnar.mar 🏂🙌. Brian and I sat out this run to indulge in a longer apres ski lunch break, but we rallied to join them for a family run down this after. TBH, I didn’t think I could do it, but I’ve come along way with powder this season and it was fun- my skiing just wasn’t quite as graceful or fast as these two 😆

Would you like to ski this? Are you team powder, trees or groomers, or maybe a mix?

Sharing how we create our family ski videos ⛷️ Sharing how we create our family ski videos ⛷️ since some have asked.

We decided to buy the Insta360 x3 after seeing the different perspectives it captures- it’s nice to have Jason (who does most of the recording) in some frames! I also purchased the inshot app because it’s easy to edit, merge clips, adjust brightness/ crop etc, and add voiceovers there.

I’ve been a visual storyteller as long as I can remember. I’m that friend who takes the pics, videos and then creates albums and little movies for myself , my friends and family. A large part of why I’m not burnt out from IG is because I’d be making these videos and blogging anyway, as a creative outlet and form of journaling. The perk of IG is that it gives me a place to share and connect with more people. ❤️

Tip : IG is a collection of memories, so don’t forget to download your photos and videos every so often! I save all these pics and videos and put them on a cloud ☁️ for my family to look at, and for my kids.

How to download all your Instagram photos/ videos/ data:
* To download Instagram data on iPhone: Profile → hamburger menu (the three stacked horizontal lines in the upper right corner) → Your activity → Download your information.
* To download your Instagram data on Mac, visit Instagram → Gear button ⚙️ → Download data.

*This is not sponsored - most of our posts are not and when we do collaborate, it’s with brands/ families or for purposes that we are passionate about and to help encourage more people to get outside. We are just learning how to use our 360 cam and look forward to using it for hikes and other adventures as well!

Happy International Women’s Day! Earlier this w Happy International Women’s Day!

Earlier this winter, I sat on a panel for “Connected: a discussion about creating a place for women to begin, belong, and benefit in skiing” hosted by @nordicaski at @evosaltlake . Never would I have imagined myself spending a day skiing, followed by sitting on a panel, with professional athletes and industry leaders, but here I was - sharing my story - the struggles and the triumphs, as well as insights from the perspective of a consumer, mom, 40+ yo woman of color, to help make skiing more inclusive and inviting to other women.

Although there are drawbacks to social media, I have Instagram to thank for connecting me with passionate and community oriented women* from all different backgrounds who share a love for the outdoors, prioritizing wellness and self care. As a doctor and mom, I don’t have much time or opportunity during regular hours to meet people. But online - I’ve grown a big network of friends who inspire and encourage each another to get outside, live intentionally, and celebrate everyday. Thanks to these friends, many who I’ve eventually met in person, l’ve had new experiences and opportunities that have helped me grow and brought me joy 🙏.

When it comes to skiing, I have to thank @brooke.froelich of @wildkindinc for connecting me with Carly of @wasatchbackmedia who cast our family in a Nordica Family Time series showing how families learn to ski. Carly has continued to invite me to conversations about Nordica women’s products while cheering me on my ski journey 💞

Recognizing the privilege in having a voice in the ski and outdoor space, as well as on IG, I will continue to share tips , resources, and encouragement - whether it’s for skiing, hiking, camping, and/ or simply approaching each day with intention and self love. Here’s to continuing to show up for one another, lifting each other up and collectively being awesome 💃🏻🙌!

* I appreciate the men who support me and other women, but today is about celebrating and holding space for women 🎉

We just got back from another fun ski weekend in U We just got back from another fun ski weekend in Utah, this time exploring the Ogden Valley area. Stay tuned, because over the next week, I’ll share our detailed itinerary and more tips for skiing and exploring this magical winter wonderland!✨

Before doing so, I wanted to share our family’s backstory with skiing. ⛷️ I grew up in the Boston area, and although we didn’t have much money or free time- my parents prioritized “experiences over things” and brought me on two ski trips during my childhood. Jason grew up in Canada and didn’t head to the mountains until he was an adult, but took to snowboarding (and later, skiing) quickly after years of playing hockey.

To be honest, I don’t have grea memories of skiing. I mostly remember being cold, uncomfortable and anxious. When Jason and I started dating, he took me night skiing at Wachusetts Mountain in the freezing rain once - which was also miserable 😩 . Jason didn’t give up on me though 😅 . He loves the winter and mountains, so he brought me to ski out west in Utah in 2011. Once I saw those majestic mountains, I was like 🤩🏔️ - I get it now, and decided to give it another try.

What finally won me over with skiing was my kids. Watching them experience snow, learn something new, push themselves through challenges, and their joy and exhilaration while skiing fast, or at the terrain park, has been magical. As they have progressed, I have too - practicing alongside them. The boys and I started as beginners, and of course we’ve had our share of trials and tribulations. But now, a few years later, skiing has become one of our family’s favorite things to do together each winter ❤️.

24 hours in Anza Borrego Mini Vlog Camping and Wil 24 hours in Anza Borrego Mini Vlog
Camping and Wildflowers ⛺️🌼
Feb 11-12, 2023

Is 24 hours in Anza Borrego Desert State Park enough? Not really 😊. There’s still so much we would have liked to explore and do. Fonts point has an impressive view of badlands, and I’ve been wanting to hike the slot and wind caves trails.

But 24 hours is all we had, so we made the most of it! 🙌 I lucked out with a last minute cancellation at Borrego Palms Canyon Campground for Saturday night, and from the info shared on Facebook wildflower groups, I knew there would be some wildflowers to see 🌸. We took our campervan, and to my surprise - my parents wanted to join us car camping in their SUV with a Luno mattress! I packed us up, planned out our food, figured out which areas we’d check out, and off we went. 🚗 ⛺️ 🌼

I know to some a quick weekend trip like this may sound exhausting. But for us, this unplugged family time in nature is always worth the effort. The trials and tribulations that I’ve experienced in my own life, plus the stories I regularly hear and see as a doctor, have given me a deep appreciation for the every day. I do not take for granted any time spent with loved ones, nor hesitate to pursue things that nourish us. I love seeing how happy my boys are playing outside, and bringing my parents along. I’m thankful my family is always up for the adventures I suggest ❤️

I hope this info helps put Anza Borrego on the map for fellow outdoor lovers in Southern California. If you’re not into camping, there are hotels and other lodgings in Borrego Springs. If you’re comfortable with dispersed camping, there’s many options for that here as well.

🌼Anza Borrego Desert Wildflowers 🌼 This was 🌼Anza Borrego Desert Wildflowers 🌼

This was taken a few weeks ago (Feb 11-12) in the Coyote Canyon and Henderson Canyon areas of Anza Borrego Desert State Park.

Bloom areas and status change week to week, so here are my tips for finding the best spring flowers in Southern California. For this park, stop by the visitor center in Borrego Springs and pick up a “flower maps” where they highlight suggested areas. For even more specific flower updates, these are the Facebook Groups I’ve been following:

* California Wildflower Report
* California Wildflower Tipline
* Anza-Borrego Wildflowers

In Orange County, there are some areas I shared in the flower reel last week. I’ve heard that Carrizo Plain and the Antelope Valley Poppy Reserve will likely bloom late March to April.

Will you be try to see the beautiful flowers this spring? 🌸

The following considerations are important when visiting wildflower areas:
* Don’t pick flowers, take only pictures.
* Stay on trail. Don’t sit, stand or lay in the wildflowers.
* Check rules about bringing dogs. Many places require dogs be on leash and stay on designated paths.
* Check rules about drones. They are not allowed at Anza-Borrego and many state parks.
* Drive carefully and cautiously. Park in designated areas. Be considerate to the locals who reside in these areas.
* Please Leave no trace.

🍴Easy Meal Ideas for Camping, road-trips, and e 🍴Easy Meal Ideas for Camping, road-trips, and even at home! (Save for later)

Figuring out what to cook/ eat on a daily basis can be hard enough. Figuring out what packs and travels well for camping trips can be even tougher! 🤔 I’m sharing what we brought for dinner and breakfast for our camping trip at Anza Borrego Feb 11-12, 2023. I’m not above takeout / pizza while traveling, but sometimes it’s good to have a few simple meals you can easily whip up.

Dinner:
Sausage (can be cooked on pan or griddle or on skewers over fire)
Sautéed onions and peppers (prepared at home, reheated at camp)
Cucumbers with Garlic Dip*
Chips with Caramelized Onion Dip*
Premade potato salad *
Kale salad with toasted almonds, dates and garlic lemon dressing (I used NYtimes recipe as a base, added dates and a squeeze of honey into dressing)
Condiments (leftover packets from takeout)

Dessert:
S’mores!
I like to use @honeymamas chocolate for a gourmet twist

Breakfast:
Kuju pour over coffee
Eggs
Breakfast sausage
Pan grilled toast
Fruit (Canteloupe and berries)

*from Trader Joes

What are some of your favorite / go to travel meals/ snacks? I regularly share our meal ideas, but here is a compilation I wrote up for the blog: https://everydayadventurefam.com/2020/07/16/campingfood/

I remember how empowering it was when I first lear I remember how empowering it was when I first learned how to fry an egg. I learned in my public school’s fourth grade home economics program, during which we were taught how to fry an egg (always use oil! I learned the hard way 😆) , make an omelette and bake a few things, as well as how to sew. From that point on, I had the foundation to cook more things - eventually helping cook family dinners for my family while my parents worked two jobs when I was in high school.

If it’s not apparent from what I share in stories and occasionally in the feed, we are a “foodie family”. We come together ❤️ around food. Everyone (including the men, in fact my dad is the best 👨‍🍳 of us all) cooks! I have found that being able to cook is the best way to ensure eating well regularly.

Since they don’t seem to offer home economics in most schools these days 😒, we are teaching our boys ourselves. I’ve been involving them in the kitchen since they were toddlers. Camping is a great time to let the kids help with cooking, because there’s no hurry, but to be present. :)

Do you like to cook, or prefer to let others do the cooking?
