How to Backcountry Yurt 🛖 Does backpacking to How to Backcountry Yurt 🛖

Does backpacking to a yurt sound fun, but you’re not sure where to start? Well, that was me a couple weeks ago… so let me share my best tip: Go with someone with experience, or on a guided trip! 😉

Seriously though, I don’t say that to be discouraging. It’s just that backpacking takes a bit of knowledge and preparation, and there’s only so much that can be learned from reading a guide. Now, if you’re already used to backpacking - then the transition to winter yurt is not hard, especially if the yurt has amenities and an outhouse (slide 9) like this one! But if you’re new to backpacking, I highly recommend letting someone else do the planning, food prep, guiding, and focus on having a good time, at least the first time!

I didn’t grow up backpacking. I’ve only been on 4 backpacking trips total. I went on my first 2 trips in West Virginia in 1997 while attending National Youth Science Camp. I loved it, but didn’t go again until our family went on our first backpacking trip in the Eastern Sierras Summer 2021. We were supposed to go with another more experienced family, but due to an injury, they had to pull out. Even though we made that trip happen, there were some stressful “what do we do?” 😳 moments.

Anyhow, this trip was easy peasy. My friend Stephanie @thebackpackingmom is a backpacking pro! Stephanie reserved the yurt, prepared all the meals, gave us all a packing list, and led the way. If you’re interested, her and @idahoadventuremom are hosting another trip in March - DM them for more details.

The yurt we stayed at was one of the Idaho City Backcountry Yurts, located about 1.5 hours north of Boise, ID. More information and how to reserve these can be found at https://parksandrecreation.idaho.gov/activities/yurts/idaho-city-backcountry/ My friend Kristin @raisinghikers also recently did a great post with more details.

Do you have any other questions about winter yurting? Is this on your adventure list?

“We don’t stop playing because we grow old; we “We don’t stop playing because we grow old; we grow old because we stop playing.” — George Bernard Shaw

A reminder that adults (not just kids!) also benefit from play. Psychologists have found that play helps relieve stress, boosts creativity, improves our mood and outlook, and keeps our minds sharp. It also improves our relationships with others. 💗

Do you make time for play in your life? If you hesitated when answering this, it’s time to put some play on your schedule! 🎉

Have you met any of your Instagram friends in real Have you met any of your Instagram friends in real life? Have you ever gone on a trip by, and for, yourself? I 💯 recommend it!

I know a lot of people have been feeling bleh about IG lately, but I really appreciate this space where I have gotten to know some of my closest adult friends. It can be hard to find people with similar interests in real life, and is even harder as a busy adult. I’m so thankful for the friends I’ve made, and continue to make, on here! (On this trip 💗: @thebackpackingmom @idahoadventuremom @raisinghikers @myadventuregang @wasatchwildchild @trail.magik @sarahlamagna @katydid_adventures )

I want to be honest and share that it wasn’t easy to take the leap to go on this trip. I couldn’t join this trip last year due to short staffing at the hospital. Leading up to the trip this year, I felt bad for taking so many days off work in January, but reminded myself that we are no longer short staffed and my supportive colleagues reassured me that they would cover the service in my absence. I also dealt with mom guilt for leaving my kids for 3 school days, but my husband and mom reassured me that they could wrangle the boys and get them to school on time while I was away 😆. Although I had never snowshoed or winter camped, Stephanie @thebackpackingmom took care of all the planning and was persistent in reassuring me that I could do this!

Sometimes we need a little push. So here I am sharing my experience to encourage and inspire you to say YES to the adventure (s), and YES to yourself ❤️

❄️ Family Ski Mini Vlog: Snowbird Resort, Utah ❄️ Family Ski Mini Vlog: Snowbird Resort, Utah. 1.2.2023❄️

The last of the 3 ski areas we visited near Salt Lake City over New Year’s weekend was Snowbird. We had to make it back to thee SLC airport for an afternoon flight home to Southern California, so we were only able to get a few runs in that morning… but we really liked our time there and would love to return and experience more of the terrain!

Info for Skiing at Snowbird ⛷️:
- Snowbird has the longest ski season in Utah. It frequently opens before Thanksgiving and stays open as long as the snowpack will allow (usually through Memorial Day, possibly through July 4th)
- Snowbird is the nearest resort to the Salt Lake City International Airport (approx 45 min)
- Snowbird Resort has three main ski zones with 27% beginner terrain, 38% intermediate and 35% advanced and expert runs
- There are four base area resort lodges that offer a variety of accommodation options and amenities.

Are you planning a ski trip (s) this winter? I hope these mini-vlogs help with ski trip planning and provide a visual to go with the information found on the internet- theyre saved to an IG guide so you can compare and decide which one to visit! If you’re familiar with the SLC ski areas, which is your favorite?

The rollercoaster 🎢 of emotions 🎭 when skiin The rollercoaster 🎢 of emotions 🎭 when skiing powder - narrated by our 9 year old ❤️

If you were listening to me (Felicia- 43 yo mom) it would sound similar , but less cute and more like this “gahhh, why did I do this? … ok I can do this…don’t fall don’t fall… whee, whoa…(fall, get up)… ok that wasn’t so bad” 😆

I wanted to express appreciation to those who have related to and offered encouragement after I shared my candid struggles with powder skiing in an earlier reel and in stories . This was our first season with freshly fallen snow and after a few days and getting a bit more used to it, I now kind of understand the magic (but am still more comfortable in groomers) ❄️ ✨

Do you enjoy powder days, or prefer groomers?

New Year Ski Day at Deer Valley ⛷️❤️ Afte New Year Ski Day at Deer Valley ⛷️❤️

After it became clear that we wouldn’t be able to ski at Alta on Jan 1 (they went into interlodge), we considered going to Brighton for night skiing- but then realized they don’t offer it on Sundays. The road to Deer Valley looked okay, so we headed back there for a few runs. After skiing, we had dinner in Salt Lake City before heading back to our Airbnb. Our cabin lost power during the snow storm and it wasn’t turned on again until after we checked out the next am, but we were fine because there was gas heat and we are used to camping 🕯️☺️

As our family has grown to love skiing more, it’s become a priority for how we spend our free time during the winter. We bought our @ikonpass with a discount through @wildkindinc for the first time this season, and love having the flexibility to ski and try out new and different resorts. It allowed us to pivot our plans over the new year, given the storm, to maximize our skiing. We are definitely making the most of our passes, as we have had many ski days this season and with more ahead! #notanad

Do you have snow where you live, or do you have to Do you have snow where you live, or do you have to travel for snow? Have you (or your kiddos) built a ☃️ snowman this winter yet ?

Growing up in a suburb of Boston, one of my favorite childhood winter memories was building snowpals with my my big brother in our yard, and then coming inside to warm up with hot cocoa.

Nowadays, although it takes some effort and travel for our Southern Californians born and raised boys to experience a snow day - I love watching boys experience and enjoy the magic ❄️🥰

First family photo of 2023 ❤️ I set up the tr First family photo of 2023 ❤️

I set up the tripod for a family selfie in front of our cute @airbnb cabin, and then Jason and I got unexpectedly ambushed with snowballs by our kids (swipe for second photo). This is us - we can pull it together, but more often are a bit of chaos 🤪

For those who have been following us for a while, you know that almost everything I post on my feed is #latergram. For those who are new followers, hi 👋 and welcome! Why do I do this?

1) It allows me to be more present in the moment - I’m a compulsive photo taker and can capture things on my phone fairly effortlessly. (Thanks to icloud for storage) The effort comes later, when I go through and sort / edit.

2) I have kids and full time job! I mainly plan out my posts at night during the elusive and limited “me time”

3) I still find instagram fun- it’s a space for me to get creative with photos, videos, and micro blogging. It’s also a space where I enjoy connecting with others, and sharing inspo for living intentionally, gratefully and joyfully. So I take the time to be thoughtful about what I post.

I wanted to explain my #behindthegram , because when I post so slowly, a weekend trip can look like we’re there for weeks 😆. I never want to give off the impression that we are “always on vacation” or that this lifestyle comes easily. We work hard, play hard, and are always juggling. Jason and I are both full time physicians and our kids are busy with school, swim team and a gazillion activities. We maximum our time off and weekends for family fun, and while it is sometimes tiring to go at the pace we do, so far it’s all been worth it, and I have no regrets. ❤️

❄️ Family Ski Mini Vlog: Alta Ski Area, Utah. ❄️ Family Ski Mini Vlog: Alta Ski Area, Utah. 12.31.2022 ❄️

The second of the 3 ski areas we visited near Salt Lake City over New Year’s weekend was Alta. We originally had planned to ski Alta for 2.5 days (our airbnb was at the base of little cottonwood canyon), but the road and resort closed the next day due to the snow storm!

On the day we skied at Alta, there was a powdery base and snow was continuously falling - making it both a winter wonderland and challenging to ski. Our family had not skied these conditions before, so there was a learning curve and some stressful moments, but in the end we all stayed safe, had fun, and had a great day!

Info for Skiing at Alta:
- Alta is “ski-only”, Snowboarders are not allowed to ride here during the regular season
- Alta is world-renowned for its steep and deep powder skiing—averaging 538’’ of snow each winter.
- Terrain is mostly intermediate to expert
- The road to Alta requires 4x4 or Chains. Be sure to check traffic / road status before heading there and be prepared for traffic
- Alta is family owned, not corporate. There are limited amenities, but we did enjoy the food at Alf’s restaurant mid mountain.
- The base lodges are family owned, but there is one luxury resort - Snowpine Lodge, where we had our apres ski dinner.

We really enjoyed your visit to Alta and definitely want to come back and ski here again!

POV : Attempting powder/ tree skiing from a 43 yo POV : Attempting powder/ tree skiing from a 43 yo mom perspective 😭 😆 😅 #allthefeels 🎢

I hesitated to share this clip of me panicking and having a melt down as I navigated through terrain and textures I wasn’t used to. It’s not glamorous , nor aspirational. But it is real and hopefully, relatable for some.

When I’ve asked in my stories why some don’t ski, many have responded: fear. Fear of falling, fear of getting hurt, fear of heights…

I share those fears, and am a risk adverse person. I’ve had a phobia of steepness (I don’t like rollercoasters either) since the first time I skied as a kid and had my first panic attack looking over the edge wondering “how am I going to make it down?!” 🥺

But here’s the thing. I made it down that hill. And I made it down this one too. And what I’ve learned along the way, is that :
1) good coaching and guiding is important (I strongly recommended lessons to get started and the a patient and supportive partner/ friend)
2) maybe I should stick to groomers. Lol

Seriously though, I almost gave up on skiing because of my fears, but gave it another chance as an adult when I became a mom and saw how much my husband and kids enjoy it. I’m glad I’ve stuck with it (though I do know my limits) as we’ve shared so many winter memories and continue to make them together ⛷️ ❄️❤️

That day has come: Both my boys (ages 7 and 9) can That day has come: Both my boys (ages 7 and 9) can out ski me! 😅

I knew this day would come, and love watching my kids progress ⛷️ . I’m technically still better than my 7 year old, but don’t share his eagerness to push my limits with deep powder, trees and steeper terrain.

I’m a “leisure skier” and I’m content with this status. When scrolling through social media, we often see images and videos of people excelling at this or that outdoorsy activity, and it’s super inspiring! But it’s also important to remember that the outdoors is for everyone, and there is no right or wrong way to enjoy the outdoors. The goal is to make getting outside (in this case: skiing) fun, so you want to keep on doing it!

I do enjoy skiing and love being outside with my family, but my out of shape 43 year old mom bod needs breaks, and I take them! Who else would join me in the do a few runs then apres ski/ take a break in the lodge club? 🥂🙋🏻‍♀️

We lucked out with a ton of powder over our New Years’ ski trip, and it looks like we may be in for some more this coming weekend as the snow storms have continued here in the West ❄️

I love 🤩 how beautiful the freshly fallen snow is, but having never previously skied these conditions- I actually found it pretty tough and tiring on my legs! 😅 It was reassuring to me to learn that I’m not alone in thinking this, according to my IG polls. How do you feel about powder days?

I can’t think of a more magical place in the win I can’t think of a more magical place in the winter than the Ice Castles. We’ve visited in 2017, 2019 and made it back again at end of 2022! Over the years, the Ice Castles have gotten more and more spectacular and this year there were so many slides, mazes and tunnels.

Tips for visiting the Ice castles:
❄️ Dress warm and wear waterproof jackets/pants, gloves and snow boots.
❄️You must enter during your ticket period, but you can stay as long as you want! We usually spend 1-2 hours.
❄️Try to plan your visit around dusk (1 hour before sunset). This time, we visited at 6pm after a day of skiing at Park City. However, during a previous year, we went a bit earlier and were able admire the ice castles during the daylight, and then lit up at night.
❄️ When we visited on 12.30.22, there were a couple of food trucks with snacks (candied nuts and churros food). We recommend eating before or after your visit if you’re going around meal time.
❄️ Visiting the Ice Castles is fun for all ages- we’ve brought our boys when they were toddlers, and my parents during prior visits. I strongly recommend study shoes with good traction as the ground is snow/ice and uneven. While this surface isn’t wheelchair or stroller accessible, we did see some parents bring a sled to pull young children through the Ice Castle.

Details:
- It can take around 30-45 minutes to get to the Ice Castles from Park City; it takes a bit longer if it is snowing.
- Adult tickets (ages 12+) are $18 - Monday-Thursday; $23- Friday-Saturday & Holidays
- Child tickets (4-11) are $12 - Monday-Thursday; $16 - Friday-Saturday & Holidays
- In addition to the Midway Utah location, there are Ice Castles in New Hampshire, New York, Minnesota and Wisconsin

Is a visit to the Ice Castles on your winter wish list?
